Welcome relief for investors after the sector falling over the past four years

North America was the second best performing with a 34 per cent rise


After years of rocky performance, gold, precious metals and oil made a comeback in 2016 as political uncertainty encouraged nervous investors to take refuge in diversifying 'safe haven' assets.

Worries over the world economy proved a catalyst to drive prices higher, rewarding the value investors who had dipped into these highly unloved areas.

The top performing investment trust sector year to date is Commodities and Natural Resources, which is up a whopping 72 per cent - no doubt a source of relief to long term investors in the area after the sector lost money every year between 2012 and 2015 and proved to be a value trap.
